Leighton Road Surgery is a long established training practice and we are very proud of our experience of training general practitioners, medical students and nurses. As a Trainee you will join our friendly, forward thinking and innovative team. You will have a dedicated Trainer but we draw on the whole practice to further enhance your training and educational experience. You will have your allocated study time and educational sessions but are essentially made to feel part of the GP team and are invited to all Practice meetings. Lunch is a communal affair where we discuss referrals and problems and pastTrainees have found this an invaluable part of their day. Our feedback from Trainees has consistently been excellent and a number have gone on to work with us once fully qualified GPs! We are proud of the way our practice has grown and the increasing range of services we offer.
We have recently merged with a smaller practice in the town and now our team of nearly 70 members of staff provides a wide range of general medical services to a population in excess of 22,000 patients. The Clinical team consists of 4 partners, salaried doctors and a large and growing number of qualified nurses supported by nurse technicians. They are ably supported by our receptionists, dispensary technicians, secretaries and administration clerks to ensure that the practice runs smoothly on a day to day basis. All of this is overseen by our experienced Practice Manager who is a non -Clinical Partner. We were recently accepted on a pilot scheme to hire a Clinical Pharmacist- we have now made this appointment and hope this will add to the expertise within the practice. Amongst our doctors there is a huge range and wealth of clinical experience ranging from Minor Operations to Clinical Research, from Rheumatology to Diabetes. Currently we have 3 trainers and one Associate Trainer although the whole team is very used to having trainees and is used to being part of a learning organisation where their own development is also highly regarded and taken seriously. Our nurses are a highly trained competent team, running a wide range of chronic disease management clinics in addition to routine nursing services and a very popular daily drop in phlebotomy clinic. Several nurses have been specially trained to manage our same day Urgent Care service- which runs from our Main LRS site and is overseen by the Duty Doctor. A number of the Nursing team are also Independent Prescribers.
Our branch site now hosts the local Maternity Hub and is where the Midwives for the whole locality are based- Ultrasound services for antenatal patients is due to start imminently-this should save our local patients from having to attend Hospital appointments for these routine checks. We also host counsellors and Brook/THT sexual health services.
The practice is located in Leighton Buzzard- a thriving market town in the south of Bedfordshire and currently operates over 2 sites. The practice population is described as semi rural, with many of our patients living in neighbouring villages. We have a large commuter population mainly made up of young business people. We provide general medical services to several residential and nursing homes and a considerable amount of our time is spent caring for our elderly population. Small pockets of deprivation exist in the area, but otherwise we serve an essentially middle class population with high levels of patient expectation. Leighton Buzzard is economically vibrant, with significant new housing developments. As the local infrastructure develops we hope to mirror this and expand our clinical team and services to ensure we are able to meet this growing demand.
